Avengers Season One Peter David Andrea Di Vito Jon Buran Nigel Raynor Mike Bowden Books Reviews
I've enjoyed Season One stories until now as they are modernizing the origin stories and retelling in fun original ways. This was the first one I didn't fully enjoy.
Avengers Season One takes place after Avengers 4, and it feels like you need to have read all the previous issues to fully get all the jokes and comments, such as Thor having an alter ego.
This feels far more like a second half of Season One, a Season Two or a lost tale than a Season One. It's more about three characters trusting each other than the team.
Possible Spoiler Alert
This story focuses on three movie characters instead of the team. Well it's sure nice of Loki to leave Ant-Man and Wasp alone because they're on vacation (yes, that's the logic of the writer). A shame because this 100 page or so story would have been a great opportunity to re-introduce them to new readers.
The writer has many other fails including Tony Stark, who invents an amazing suit that keeps the metal out of his heart, but then he takes Hulk into the air and thinks it's a good idea to blast Hulk down into the city??? Dumbest move I recall from a superhero in a long time! Even if it's a dream or a simulation, it's still not something Tony Stark would do. Over 1,000 people killed? All intelligence, character and common sense are being tossed out the window to smash some buildings, and I put that on the writer.
Even Spiderman wouldn't have made such a mistake in his first days.
Sorry, but when the writer fails with something so basic and makes the brilliant characters so incredibly dumb, it's hard to get into and enjoy the story.
The Hulk in Avengers #1 was uncontrollable. I'd have to double check but I don't recall him being intelligent in those days. Certainly not intelligent to show up at a meeting of the heroes and immediately figure out that someone (and who) is pulling their strings.
Thor, in these early days, knew to use "puny humans" to turn Hulk's loyalty? It just doesn't feel right. So much feels out of place like Captain America seeing people that supposedly don't exist before being hit with the drugged dart.
The could have been good but weak writing filled the pages and cracked the story apart into a disappointing attempt. I'm glad this guy didn't write the movie!
To top it all off, it ends with a potty joke showing the true brains behind the story were on par with the kid in the town that didn't exist.
A disappointment in so many ways.
This is another retelling of the origins of the Avengers. This one is written by Peter David, and so it was entertaining, but not really necessary. Don't worry, there will be another one in ten years.
1. This is part of a line of original graphic novels meant for new readers of Marvel. But the story takes place AFTER the first five or six issues of the 1963 Avengers comics. If you want the origins of these heroes or of the Avengers, look elsewhere. It's hard to imagine this being a good place to start if you only know the characters from the movies.
2. Peter A. David (PAD) is known for his witty, clever stories. But there is nothing of the sort here. Basically, it's a lot of talk, and a little action. Iron Man, Thor and Capt America all come across as a bit dull. The only time PAD's script comes to life in the least is when he gets to write the Hulk, a character he wrote for over a decade, albeit in a very different era. It's hard to say if PAD was just not engaged by the characters, or whether the editors told him the kind of story they wanted. Either way, there is little here to make readers think these heroes are the world's mightiest.
3. Five artists create this book. Five. I can't imagine why Marvel couldn't find one artist to do the whole thing. It's not that long. And wasn't being released on a monthly deadline. They could have and should have done better with this. (And it doesn't help that the art is rather generic and that none of the artists are particularly well known.)
4. While readers who buy this can also get a digital copy, $25 for such a slight story, plus a reprint of a completely different Avengers comic, is very steep. Comic book fans can find stories of comparable length in the standard comic book format for $7 or $8, just without the hard cover.
Overall, new fans would do better to read Joe Casey and Phil Noto's Avengers The Origin, and anyone else has already read an Avengers story of better quality.
Great product for a great, competitve price. Shipped to me in a reasonable time, and product perfect. Can't wait to collect them all.
The is a nice re-telling of the original Avengers in their early days. It diplays how Loki continued to manipulate them even
after he was defeated in their first adventure.
Nice solid story and artwork.
Funny, entertaining, upbeat. Nothing revolutionary here, nor did I want or expect anything from a franchise from the 60's.
I have read some other things by Peter David that I liked, and I love the Avengers. So I thought I couldn't go wrong with this book. Whoops. The story is a mess. Half way through I started skimming the text and only really paying attention to the art just so I could get through it.
Peter David is one of my favorite writers! He takes the well-established Avengers origin story and makes is wholly fresh. Top recommendation!
