The Filigree Ball Being a full and true account of the solution of the mystery concerning the JeffreyMoore affair edition by Anna Katharine Green Reference eBooks
Written by someone with an extensive vocabulary and flair for the dramatic. We follow the eager work of a young police detective in 1800's America, determined to be a detective in his first big case - the sensational death of a beautiful young woman in a creepy family mansion just two weeks after her wedding to Washington's most eligible bachelor. An uncle immediately attempts to take over the property, and neither the widower nor the girl's stepdaughter seem to be innocent in their knowledge of the girl's apparent suicide - which is determined under investigation, to possibly be murder.
We observe everything the budding detective sees, and the story doesn't drag. I would read more by this author.

The Filigree Ball Being a full and true account of the solution of the mystery concerning the JeffreyMoore affair edition by Anna Katharine Green Reference eBooks Reviews
This is a good story, but written in a very old-fashioned (it IS old!) way. I enjoyed the story line a great deal, but the material is definitely not "modern." If you like this type of fiction, you'll enjoy this book. It's full of twists and turns, interesting and descriptive.
This book was a fabulous find. It was exciting to read with a great twist in the mystery. The vocabulary included great words lost to our current society. Make it a PBS Masterpiece theather show for Sunday evenings!
I'm so glad I've discovered author Anna Katharine Green. Her plots are spell-binding, so much so that the Victorian writing is never intrusive. The pacing is perfect and there is never unnecessary descriptions or dialogue. You will never, ever guess "who-done-it" or how the crime was committed. The Filigree Ball was an absolute page-turner.
Here is another terrific read from an author who lived a hundred years ago. The mystery is still fresh, the characters most interesting, and a plot that will keep you captivated. It starts with the mysterious death of a beautiful woman and tells the story of what has haunted her family for generations. Well worth your time.
This was a fun but dark book, scary enough that wussy little old me had to turn the lights up, and with a neat, totally unexpected twist which caught me completely off guard.
A story of deep love, a horrible family legacy, complete with an accursed house hiding a dark secret, but tempered with gentle humor as well, in the form of sassy Jinny.
If you enjoy Victorian writing and are not put off by the turn of phrases used in older writing, this is a mystery to enjoy. I have read 3 or 4 of Anna Green's stories so far and this is my favorite. It was suspenseful enough to hold interest even if you could anticipate some of the conclusions. Twists and turns to keep it interesting. Miss Green's detectives are always enjoyable characters, but she also spends time probing the thoughts and motives of her other characters in this story. But with enough action that the pace does not drag. Why have we not heard more of this wonderful early mystery writer? Better that Conan Doyle in my book!
I love Anna Katharine Green books and this mystery was really great because unlike modern mystery books I couldn't figure out how the bride died. The actual way she died and how it happened was very well thought out with a lot of imagination and there were lots of plot twists to lead you down the wrong path. All in all a great book. One of the few I couldn't solve within the first few minutes or even before the book ended.
